Hupyee Swimwear is based in New York City and was started by Hupyee Ruiz in 1997.

Hupyee started making her own clothes when she was 12. She learned tailoring for men and women in fashion institutes in Malaysia when she was a teenager. In search of new experiences and excitement she went to Singapore. She took a job as a production supervisor for a ski jacket manufacturer for three years. She decided then to continue her education and studied modeling and fashion design. In 1984 she opened her own store where she designed and made wedding gowns, evening wear and casual wear Her customers included night club singers.

In 1986, again in search of new opportunities, Hupyee moved to New York. She took classes in pattern making, draping and grading at F.I.T. and took freelance jobs as a pattern maker. During that time she started to make clothes for her own customers and formulating her own fashion lines. In that process she became interested in swimwear design. She began to make her own swimwear samples and designed her own machine attachments to produce them.

By 1997 her first swimwear line consisting of reversible bikinis with triangle and halter tops in unique combinations of solid colors was ready. She walked into boutiques and stores to show her collection and started getting some orders. Soon, her evening jackets and bikinis were on display at Bellisima at the Plaza Hotel, attracting the rich and famous, and in other speciality boutiques and lingerie stores in Manhattan. As she kept refining her swimwear designs, the guiding idea was that they should be "comfortable and sexy" and look "expensive and elegant".

In 1998 she introduced her innovative medium length body shaper that made the body look trim and sexy. She continued to expand her collection to include beachwear with a see-through shirt jacket in two layers with pockets and sea-shell buttons.

In 1999 Hupyee took Hupyee Swimwear online and added a collection of one-piece suits. Her sexy triangle bikini in vinyl with a look of leather was featured in the 1999 July/August issue of the french magazine Photo.

In June 2006 Hupyee opened her own boutique at Edge*nyNOHO where her swimwear attracts a lot of attention. When visitors come in and see her exciting display of swimwear, evening wear, winter coats, jackets, dresses and beach bags they often ask: "Are all these your designs?"
